Computer Registration

Why Am I Seeing This Page?

Every year, Messiah University requires all students to register ANY personally owned computers, gaming consoles, mobile phones and/or any other device that utilizes Messiah's residential network. Until this registration is complete, you will not be able to access the campus network or the Internet from that device. The registration is simple; all you will need is the device that you would like to have access to the Internet and your Messiah username and password.

To begin, please read the following.

Acceptable Usage Policies

By using Messiah University's network, it is important to iterate you are subject to all governmental regulations, laws and guidelines as well as all Messiah University policy, including but not limited to:

What You Should Know

Illegal Downloading

Downloading any file (movies, music, etc.) from the Internet without permission of the copyright owners is illegal. It is a violation of Messiah University policy and of Federal Copyright laws. When students download copyrighted material, both the students and Messiah University can be held responsible. There are watchdog groups for the Recording and Motion Picture Industries that monitor these types of Internet downloads. If they report students to Messiah University, those students will face consequences, such as losing their network access, coming before the peer review board and/or legal sanctions as applicable. For more information, please see the Alleged Copyright Infringement by Messiah University Students or Employees and Top 5 myths about downloading Internet music.

Messiah University uses bandwidth shaping to monitor usage to and from suspect sources. In the the event that the University becomes aware of the illegal distribution of copyrighted materials, either by internal monitoring or through notification by outside sources, it will proceed according to the published Alleged Copyright Infringement by Messiah University Students or Employees as well as additional policies/procedures as applicable.

Users desiring to download music, movies or other protected content, must use a legal downloading service (click here for a list of legal downloading services).

Virus Protection

It is your responsibility to install virus protection software on your computers and to keep the software up to date. In the past, viruses have been a cause of severe disruption to the residential network. If your computer causes disruption to the network, you may lose access to the network. (Please call Student Computer Services at x.3333 for directions on how to install virus protection software.)

Unauthorized Access to Other Systems

Attempting to circumvent Messiah University's protection schemes for data or computer systems, uncover security loopholes, monitor someone else's communications, or gain access to someone's computer without their permission is a violation of Messiah University policy.

I am aware of Messiah University's policies and applicable governmental regulations, laws and guidelines and agree to abide by their terms. I have read the above material about Acceptable Usage Policies, Illegal Downloading, Virus Protection, and unauthorized access to systems as well as the additional content that is referenced within each of the sections.
